There are four portfolios that make up Chuffy. Acorn, Spartan, Pensions and Fixed. They all operate independently of each other and all have their separate functions. I do not operate a weightings system between the portfolios but when funds are required to make full use of my pension allowance then Acorn makes up any shortfall.

Acorn

This is the equity portfolio and is the oldest. I stopped paying into Acorn some years ago now, in fact it would be twice the size than it is now if I had not transferred funds to other portfolios. Acorn provides the most growth and the most enjoyment. I check the prices of its holdings once a week at most with more attention paid to any news flow rather than price movements. The portfolio is run along Focus Investment lines, where I take large positions in just a few well researched companies.

Spartan

This is the mixed regular savings portfolio. It is paid for with any over time or bonus pay and contributions from Acorn. I use it as a counter balance against the short term volatility of Acorn, but without affecting the overall performance of Chuffy. It also provides exposure to markets of which I know little and a shelter for funds from tax. I now check the prices of its holdings weekly but it used to be once a month.

Pensions

This portfolio is a untidy mixture of pension plans accumulated over the years which needs sorting. It performs well but is uncoordinated with payments coming from Acorn. The fund is now holding equities direct and as a result is monitored weekly along with Acorn and Spartan. I use up my maximum allowance for each tax year.

Fixed

Profits made from Acorn have made their way here. The money would preferably go into Pensions but is above the maximum allowance. This portfolio consists of Property and With-Profits Bonds. It has performed well but safety will always come before growth here. The value of this fund is reviewed annually unless there are any major movements.
